Glowing Up After a Down Period | The Other Side of Depression

Your appetite is back. Your energy is starting to return. You are able to care about what is going on around you. For a lot of people (including myself), these are familiar signs that indicate the end of a depressive period. And if you’re anything like me, basic things fall to the wayside while you’re away. I say away because…that’s what it feels like. You are involuntarily checked-out from the present. So, I put together a list of things you can do to get your post-depression glow up on! These are the steps that have been the most helpful to me after a down period.

6 Post-depression Glow Up Steps

  1. Forgive yourself: Seriously. Depression is so many things to so many people but it is hard on everyone. You keep it in the road despite your brain chemistry demanding otherwise. You made it through and take heart in the fact that you are on the other side of it. Waking up and trying again is the point. You’re strong and resilient. You’re brave. And so incredibly loved.
  2. Bathe and wash your hair (if possible): It sounds super basic but the power of a hot shower should not be minimized. Turn your shower or tub on and stand in that cleansing stream as long as you need to. Physically washing away the depression will leave you with a fresh canvas. If you have your hair styled and washing isn’t an option right now, spend some time sprucing it up and moisturizing your scalp.
  3. Get dressed: Put down the PJ pants and stained shirt. Now is the time to throw on a favorite outfit that makes you feel happy. Looking good can directly impact how good you feel. Remember it doesn’t have to be anything fancy it just has to make you feel good about yourself.
  4. Eat a Good Meal: Try for some variety. Veggies, fruits, and lean meat (if your diet allows). Nourish your body and give it the fuel it needed to effectively carry you through the day. Don’t forget to guzzle down some water throughout the day as well. Oftentimes in periods of reclusiveness, we tend to neglect even the most basic needs. Thirst is one of them.
  5. Strip Your Bed: This is a big one for me! Take all the linens and things off of your bed and wash them. Especially pillowcases and fitted sheets because they are the closest to your body. Give them a good wash and if you have the time and the weather permits give air drying a shot. But a dryer works just as well. Once they finish washing make up your bed. Trust me you will not regret it!
  6. Take it Easy: It isn’t uncommon to feel emotionally raw and tender after a downswing. Instead of trying to run full force back into life, baby step it. Not only will this prevent that awful feeling of overstimulation, but it gives you time to identify people, places or situations that negatively impact your mental health. It is ok to not engage with certain experiences (or people) right away or at all if they are bringing you down.
